The Northern Trust Open may be 90 days away, but there are already plenty of reasons to get excited about the 2015 tournament, taking place Feb. 18-22 at the Riviera Country Club.
For starters, the tournament’s Web site is already touting its “5 Scariest Holes in Golf ” feature story, including two holes from Riviera—the deceptively difficult 315-yard 10th, and the infamous 199-yard 6th hole, with its two-tiered green and a bunker splitting the putting surface in two.
Augusta National’s 11th hole and the final holes at Muirfield Village and Quail Hollow Club round out the top 5. To get an early preview of all the holes in action, visit NorthernTrustOpen.com for more information.
Meanwhile, the PGA has opened the application process for the 2015 Northern Trust Exemption, which provides an opportunity for a top golfer who represents the advancement of diversity in golf and wouldn’t otherwise be eligible to compete.
Candidates can apply now on the tour- nament’s homepage (above). Entries must be received by Ja. 12; the winner will be announced on Jan. 19.
Last year’s exemption recipient was Harold Varner III, who narrowly missed becoming one of 50 players to receive a PGA tour card at this year’s Web.com Tour Championship in September.
“I don’t carry a torch or anything, but I can be a light and I can inspire people, but I want to inspire people of all races,” Varner, 24, told USA Today at the event. “In golf, it is a little different, obviously, but times are changing. My dad has always told me we don’t see color. You treat the person for who they are.”
On the youth level, for aspiring players ages 7 to 17 who dream about playing in the Northern Trust some day, the Los Angeles Golf Academy is holding its coed Golf Camp for Juniors from Monday, Dec. 22 to Friday, Jan. 9, at the Heroes Golf Course on the VA campus in Brentwood.
Led by PGA Head Professional Carlos Rodriguez, the camp covers everything from PGA rules and etiquette to playing the course and the mental aspects of the game.
Full day (9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or half- day (9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 1-4 p.m.) sessions are both available. No camp will be held on Christmas Day or Jan. 1.
