Drescher Planetarium Offering Free Virtual Shows in May

These Shows Will Cover Topics, Including Ground-Based Observatories, the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud, SpaceX Competitors, and More

Santa Monica College’s John Drescher Planetarium is set to continue its series of free, live virtual shows every Friday evening throughout May 2024. 

Hosted online at smc.edu/planetarium, these shows will cover a range of captivating topics, including ground-based observatories, the Kuiper Belt and Oort cloud, astrophotography, SpaceX competitors, and the launch of a new series titled “Deep Sky Deep Dive.”

The Friday evening events kick off at 8 p.m. following a streamlined virtual digest of the popular Night Sky Show at 7 p.m., providing attendees with the latest news in astronomy and space exploration. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with planetarium lecturers and ask questions during the shows.

Utilizing the Zoom platform, planetarium lecturers will deliver these presentations while SMC’s new planetarium and observatory are currently under construction. Attendees can download the free Zoom software at zoom.com to participate.

The lineup for May 2024 includes:

  • May 3: “Great Ground-based Observatories” presented by Planetarium Lecturer Sarah Vincent
  • May 10: “Solar System Survey Part 9: Kuiper Belt and Beyond” presented by Planetarium Lecturer Sarah Vincent
  • May 17: “Astrophotography 101” featuring Guest Lecturer David Pinsky
  • May 24: “Competition for SpaceX” presented by Planetarium Lecturer Jim Mahon
  • May 31: “Deep Sky Deep Dive: Supernova” presented by Planetarium Lecturer Sarah Vincent
