Why Horse Riding Apes Were Seen on Venice Beach This Week

President of 20th Century Studios Steve Asbell Reposted the Event on X

Even for those who are used to the bustle of amusing (oftentimes peculiar) activities and characters on Ocean Front Walk, something earlier this week made onlookers wonder if they were on a different planet.

On Monday, April 22, at least three individuals dressed as monkeys reminiscent of those depicted in the upcoming “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” rode horseback along the coastline to promote the film. The 20th Century movie is the fourth installment in the reboot of the iconic franchise. It is set to premiere May 10.

TikTok user @switchflipjones captured the spectacle on social media via a near-two minute long video. The characters are seen roaming around the beach while on top of the animals without speaking but occasionally making gestures. President of 20th Century Studios Steve Asbell reposted the event on X (formerly Twitter), stating “We out here opening up an entirely new front on the CGI vs. practical effects twitter debate! #KingdomofthePlanetoftheApes.”

Directed by Wes Ball and written by Josh Friedman, the movie is set several generations after Caesar’s reign, during which time apes have become the dominant species while humans have been subjugated as the primitive ones. As a new despotic ape leader aims to build an empire, the film follows a chimpanzee hunter’s journey to determine the future of both apes and humans.

It stars Owen Teague as “Noa” (the chimpanzee hunter), Freya Allan as “Mae” (a young woman who joins Noa’s journey) and Kevin Durand as “Proximus Ceaser”. Other cast members include William H. Macy, Peter Macon, Travis Jeffery, Lydia Peckham and Neil Sandilands.
